Conference Presentations

On December 5, 2021 (Sunday), our CEO Hiroyuki Nobuto was selected as a speaker and gave a presentation at the Art Meets Care Society 2021 Annual Conference held at Sendai Mediatheque.

Presentation Title
Challenges and Proposed Improvements for Enhancing Accessibility in Art Appreciation Facilities

Presenter
Hiroyuki Nobuto, CEO, Alt Design Office

Date & Venue
December 5, 2021 (Sun)
Sendai Mediatheque

Abstract

In recent years, initiatives to improve accessibility in art appreciation have been increasing, and with the spread of COVID-19, they have been recognized as a socially significant need.

However, focusing on people with disabilities or the elderly who require screen readers and text-to-speech tools, many challenges arise when accessing websites for art appreciation.

This presentation organized such issues based on several case studies and proposed solutions.
It also discussed the ideal state of art appreciation websites from the perspective of reasonable accommodation as stipulated in the Act for Eliminating Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities and its 2021 amendment.

Speaker’s Note

This presentation was originally planned as a proposal for improving accessibility on several art appreciation websites where accessibility remains insufficient.
However, instead of focusing solely on technical aspects, we chose to share our approach and perspective on web accessibility with conference participants and invited their feedback.

We also touched on the concept of reasonable accommodation introduced in the May 2021 amendment of the Act, and presented how Alt Design Office envisions its future role in advancing web accessibility.

Q&A Highlights

  • Are there specific initiatives for people with intellectual disabilities?

  • Is it possible to create art websites that everyone can equally enjoy?

  • Beyond text readers, what other tools can support people with disabilities?

The discussion provided valuable insights for our future initiatives.
We sincerely thank everyone for their cooperation and support.
